Criteria for Cincinnati Art Club Signature Status

Signature Membership Review, scheduled three times
annually, is in place to insure that the Cincinnati
Art Club members, exhibiting under the Signature
Member banner, meet the historical standards of
excellence established by our founding members.
Exhibits today represent the very best work of our
Signature Members and are held in high regard by the
community at large for the expertise represented.
The criteria for Signature status guide the decision
making process of the Signature Membership
Selection Committee named by the President.
The exhibiting members who comprise the Signature
Membership Selection Committee have
traditionally remained anonymous to insure
objectivity and fairness of the
process.

Criteria

*Five (5) pieces of artwork in the following art media:  painting, drawing, sculpture, engraving, serigraphy, constructions, architecture and other arts which pertain to the expression of an idea applied to a surface by hand, whether sprayed, drawn, impressed or glued, etc.

*A recognizable individual style

*Consistency in medium, style and execution of design

*Excellence in painting technique (if applicable), design and composition, drawing skills (if applicable), artistic interpretation and expression.

*Evidence a high level of understanding of light and its values, the dynamics of color, and the        use of space and perspective.

*Acceptable presentation of the finished work -- framing which enhances the artwork (if applicable).

It is important to remember that this selection process is not the acceptance or rejection of an individual.  Instead, it is the opportunity for the artist to reach in his/her work a level of excellence recognized by his/her peers in the Cincinnati Art Club.

Signature Membership Eligibility:

Those who produce works in the graphic arts (paintings, prints and drawings), sculpture and architecture which, in the opinion of the Signature Membership Selection Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees, are of such caliber as to qualify for Signature Membership. One must first become an Associate Member before applying for Signature Status.

Privileges

They shall enjoy all the privileges available to Art Club members, may exhibit their work in the Club's annual group shows, or may make use of the gallery (when available and approved by the Exhibitions Chairperson) for personal or group members exhibitions. They may hold office.

Responsibilities:

They shall be responsible for dues and assessments as may be levied against their class of membership, shall subscribe to the Articles of Incorporation as required by law, to vote on all questions and to vote for the candidates for all offices at the Annual Business Meeting in May of each year. To become an Signature Member, candidates must submit to a jury review of their work. No work will be considered without the candidate first having submitted an application for membership. The candidate artist should take care to submit their own original art and works that are consistent in quality. They may wish to seek the opinions of other accomplished artists before making their selection of work to be submitted

Upon the posting of a notice of the dates for Signature Membership Selection in the Club's monthly newsletter, website, and on the Club bulletin board, candidates seeking this status of membership are required to deliver (at 9:30 AM on the date of the review) at least five (5) samples of their recent works, framed with professional quality (as required for any exhibit at the Art Club) to the Club. These submitted works will be juried by the Signature Membership Selection Committee who then submits their recommendations of acceptance or rejection to the Board of Trustees for final approval. This Committee meets not less than three (3) times each year. Candidates will be notified of the decision of the Board of Trustees by the Membership Chairperson as soon as possible

MONTHLY CRITIQUES

We highly recommend members attend free Critique sessions held each First Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at the Clubhouse

These Critique Sessions have become very popular and highly successful with both Signature and Associate Members participating. Members bring in paintings either in progress or finished to obtain sincere feedback (not praise) from a group of fellow artists. Significant improvement is not uncommon for those that attend regularly.

Effective, September, 2007, there will now be a Third Tuesday Critique at the Club House from 7:00 - 9:00 PM held for Associate Members.

Current Membership Chairman is Bill Powell (513-631-2446  billpowell@zoomtown.com).  To apply for Associate Membership or Signature Membership, please send your name, address, phone, and email to Bill.  Bill will send you an application and explain the process to you.

Effective:  1/18/07

For years new members have worked hard to become “Active” in the Cincinnati Art Club. While we, as members, are well aware of the connotation of “Active” status, it means nothing to the general public. As a result, it is more difficult to promote our member shows and reflect the quality of the art exhibited in our gallery. The Board of Directors has voted unanimously:  all references to Active Member status will be replaced with the new term “Signature Member”.

As we embrace the new millennium, our hope is to propel the club to even greater heights. We hope you will all embrace this new title, and we encourage our Associate Members to re-energize their efforts to achieve this coveted status.
